Current and Future Treatments in Osteoporosis and Other Bone Loss Conditions: Potential Role of Biologic Anti-RANK Ligand Therapy

The prevention and treatment of osteoporosis will become increasingly significant clinical issues as the mean age of the US population increases. The incidence and overall costs of managing osteoporosis-related fractures are anticipated to increase concomitantly. Clinical interventions that identify and appropriately treat patients at risk for or who have osteoporosis can reduce the incidence of fracture and related morbidity, as well as cost. Because osteoporosis is underdiagnosed and undertreated, educational programs that effectively discuss risk identification and disease management strategies can help to increase treatment rates. Improving practice patterns can increase the effective utilization of resources and support optimal patient outcomes.
